Times change [Rock and Roll] — FOB Antwerpen @ 3:19 pm

To counter my rather sensitive post on Knut, something far less cute. Three R ´n´ R albums with a crotch on the cover (O, the LP times, when the cover was as magical as the music itself… Something died when Internet took over). Same idea, different times and styles.

3 Covers

The Rolling Stones´ “Sticky Fingers” (1971) is beyond doubt one of the best R ´n´ R albums ever. The idea of the cover came when Andy Warhol told Mick Jagger that having a real zipper on a cover would be amusing. A year later, Jagger proposed the idea for “Sticky Fingers”. The packaging proved the Stones had not lost their gift for outrageousness.

A decade later, Mötley Crüe released "Too Fast For Love", one of the most influential albums of its genre, recorded in one week, with a sound as raw as sandpaper. The cover, a tribute of “Sticky Fingers”, is also a natural thing for the “Kings of cock Rock”. The leathered crotch of Vince Neil is a display of intentions from the biggest hoodlums of rock and roll.

WASP brinked on the absurd with “Animal” in 1984. Obsessed with gore, “The Chainsaw Massacre”, Alice Cooper, the original sleeve depicts a codpiece and a circular saw. Deemed too controversial, Capitol Records risked being banned from major retail chains, backed out and the single was shelved until the band stroke a deal with the independent label Music For Nations.

  1. As I told you in person last week you forgot to include Leño´s “Corre corre” cover. I know you don´t feel very comfortable with the idea of including a spanish (from Carabanchel) rock n roll band in this post (neither in your blog) but the cover and the tribute to Sticy Fingers deserves it!

Can I upload photos in this comment? I don´t think so.

  2. No you cannot upload anything here; that is my privilege as administrator, and mine alone.

Indeed, I do not like the idea of mixing gold and shit, so you won´t have Leño posted. You said “I know you don´t feel very comfortable with the idea of including a spanish (from Carabanchel) rock n roll band in this post”. Well, the sole idea of including the words “Spanish” and “Rock and Roll” in the same sentence makes me feel rather uncomfortable.

All the same - an although the cover does not depict a crotch, as the focus is rather on the belt buckle - any tribute to Sticky Fingers is worthy of my blog (albeit this one belongs in second division). There you go.

  3. Proving the success of my first suggestion related with Rock n Roll Covers, I would beg the Administrator for the inclusion of the spanish-only Sticky Fingers´ sleeve.

Sometimes I think it´s much nastier than the zipped one, and the both of us know that 3.000 fuckin´pesetas (18€) kept it appart from me a hundred years ago.

    Can I?

  4. I could never say no to that wish, ever!

I agree, the Spanish release was much nastier and far more offensive, but who are we to question Franco´s head of censorship? However, I think this and the story of that LP fair a hundred years ago deserve a post. This one is dedicated to that boy…
